Field Staff Report – Avarice 110M Nano / Hirasuzuki (Japanese Black Seabass)

Angler: Ripple Fisher Feild staff/ Mr.Kawahara

We received a field report from our field staff member, Kawahara, detailing a session targeting Hirasuzuki (Japanese Black Seabass) under extremely limited conditions. Please enjoy the report below.

Fishing Date

February – New Moon, Spring Tide

Area

A rocky shoreline influenced by powerful channel currents.

This was a highly specific spot where whitewater forms only during the brief transition from incoming to outgoing tide.

Based on the sea temperature and the timing of the spring tide, spawning fish were expected to move through the area.

Conditions Analysis

Wind: 1 m/s

At this location, the incoming tide collides with a strong outgoing current. Due to the large tidal difference characteristic of spring tides, a temporary and subtle whitewater zone develops.

The prime window begins at high tide slack and shifts into the outgoing tide.
The opportunity lasts approximately five minutes.

With no wind-driven waves, missing this timing would result in completely calm conditions afterward.

The presence of bait (kibinago) had been confirmed during an eging session the previous day.
Bait was abundant. The strategy was to wait for the exact alignment of current and timing.

Approach

Based on the scale and thickness of the whitewater, the selected lure was:

Tackle House TKF130 Force / 18g

The whitewater formed at my feet, flowing from right to left when viewed head-on.

Positioning on the upstream side, I cast slightly down-cross so the lure would receive the current from the front-right angle and naturally drift along the edge of the whitewater.

As the lure drifted left and approached a submerged reef, a powerful surface-breaking strike occurred — the fish’s tail fully exposed in a jumping bite.

The hit came precisely along the planned course and timing.

Result

78 cm
14 lb class (measured with Boga Grip)

A fish in excellent condition.

Tackle

Rod: Avarice 110M Nano
Reel: STELLA C5000XG
Line: X-BRAID UPGRADE 22 lb
Leader: Monofilament Leader 30 lb
Lure: TKF130 Force / 18g

Rod Impression

Under conditions such as:

  • No wind

  • Strong current

  • Limited whitewater formation

The performance of the Avarice 110M was once again clearly demonstrated.

① Casting Precision

Exceptional control that allows accurate placement on tight targets.

② Drift Control

Highly sensitive feedback, clearly transmitting subtle changes in current when guiding the lure toward submerged structure.

③ Fight Control

During the fight with a 14 lb fish in powerful current:

The rod delivered strong butt power capable of lifting the fish even under heavy flow, while bending deeply and resiliently to absorb pressure.

Even with a thin-wire #4 hook, there was no deformation or failure. The fish was landed smoothly and securely.

The true essence of Hirasuzuki (Japanese Black Seabass) fishing lies in reading complex conditions, applying technique, and seizing a fleeting opportunity.

While this game typically depends on the alignment of wind, waves, tide level, and whitewater, this session demonstrates that even in windless conditions, combining underwater factors such as current structure and bait presence adds deeper dimension to the pursuit.

The Ripple Fisher Avarice Series is built not only to respond to visible conditions, but to detect subtle changes beneath the surface — empowering anglers to construct their own answers.

The Hirasuzuki season is entering its peak.
