【English/Staff Fishing Report】 KING FISH casting game in the harsh winter in JAPAN

KING FISH casting game in the harsh winter in JAPAN

In January and February of the new year, the fishing industry is in a state of excitement as large fishing shows are held all over the country.
As a rod manufacturer, we will be exhibiting at fishing shows from Yokohama to Osaka and other places, so it will be a hectic time right from the start of the new year.

Moving on to the topic of kingfish casting during this fishing show, it will be in the middle of the harsh winter, so the seawater temperature will drop to the lowest point and the number of individuals that respond to lures will be very low compared to the high season, so it tends to be considered a difficult season and people tend to avoid it…
However, this harsh winter is a hidden gem of a season where it is easy to catch super-large individuals that can withstand low water temperatures.

In addition, baitfish such as saury and squid are often caught in bait situations that are relatively easy to catch with lures, and if the timing is right, you can expect to catch record-breaking catches, so this is truly the best season behind the scenes.

The first half of February is usually the fishing show period, and it is a time when we are unable to go out fishing, but we were informed that the conditions for casting for kingfish during this harsh winter were better than usual, so we couldn’t wait any longer and headed to the “STATUS”, which departs from Nagasaki City, with staff members, and field staff member.

Until the day before we set sail, strong northwesterly winds typical of the harsh winter season blew, and the rough weather meant we were unable to set sail for a week, so we were unable to get any fresh information. However, it seems that just a week before, there had been many schools of 20kg class kingfish chasing saury, so this time we mainly prepared rods and lures that would be useful for big bait situations such as saury.

Fishing tackle setting in this trip

■ Tackle setting specialized for casting performance

●Aquila ST 85-6 SW 14000XG Pe6 + 130LB
●Aquila EX 83-6 SW 14000XG Pe6 + 130LB
●Aquila MST 85-7+ SW 14000XG Pe7 + 140LB
●Lure used:180~250mm / About 80~140g

This model is lightweight enough to react instantly, has sharp casting ability, and is highly capable of long-distance casting to hit boils in distant locations.
Although the power is a little light for the 20kg class kingfish that we had been catching based on prior information, the hit zone was a deep point at around 40-50m deep, so we prioritized accurate casting accuracy and ease of use and made it us main models in this time.

■Tackle setting specialized for big bait situations capture

●Aquila MST 711-8+ SW 18000HG Pe8 + 170LB
●Aquila MST 82-9+ SW 18000HG Pe9 + 200LB
●Lure used:220~350mm / About 110~280g

This model has the butt power to easily handle the extra-big lures that match this saury situation and to reliably lift extra-big kingfish.
This model has the power to attract fish from deep waters by appealing with the silhouette and strong vibrations that are unique to big lures. It is also suitable for shallow areas with high difficulty and points in straits with fast currents.

■Tackle setting specialized for tiny bait situations in the spring mackerel season

●Aquila MLT 82-3/6 SW 14000XG Pe6 + 130LB
●Aquila MLT 82-2/4 SW 8000HG Pe4 + 80LB
●Lure used:160~200mm / About 40~100g

A model that allows you to delicately and carefully handle the tiny plugs used to capture micro bait situations.
Designed to approach selective kingfish that dislike strong vibrations.
The main kingfish season in the southern part of Japan is the kingfish in the spring season from March to April, but since this is the time when they are running, this light setting takes into account the change in micro bait situation.

The situation of our fishing day

First, we head to a spot on the eastern side of the Goto Islands.
On the first day of fishing, the northwest wind blew at times to about 10 meters, and there were big swells in the sea, making our feet unsteady, but the fish seemed to be responding very well to the top plugs.

Looking at the fish finder, we see both good and bad information at the same time.
First of all, the good information is that although they don’t seem to be saury, there is a strong bait reaction from the bottom to the middle layer.
The bad information is that the storm that has been going on for a week has caused the water temperature to drop sharply by 2 degrees, and the current is slow, only flowing at around 0.1 to 0.4 knots, but thanks to the strong wind the boat is somehow moving forward, so we can continue casting patiently.

The hit zone at this spot is a drop from a depth of 50m, so we prioritized distance and maneuverability and used Pe6-7 tackle, quickly searching just below the surface with a 220-250mm lure that is effective for saury situations.
However, I got no bites, and couldn’t see any saury boils, so I quickly gave up and moved to a spot further north.

■Tips for choosing lures that match saury situations

A diving pencil of 220mm or more is effective for saury, which grows to over 30cm.
Bites are often concentrated on diving pencils rather than poppers(Chugger), and we feel that there is a strong tendency to prefer diving pencils with a natural roll action rather than a wide sliding action.
Furthermore, daipens with reduced buoyancy that make it easier to swim just below the surface of the water are effective, as pacific saury have high swimming ability and are fast swimmers.
Even with diving pencils with high buoyancy, you can make them swim underwater and easily achieve a stable lure action by adding a swivel or making the hook heavier.
Also, when it is difficult to swim lures in rough water, the “Aquila MST 85-7+” with its flexible tip, and the “Aquila ST 85-6”, which makes it easy to fine-tune the line slack, are a good choice.

To overcome adverse conditions
